ECONOMICS AND THE GREAT DEPRESSION

TODAY IS TUESDAY, MARCH 8, 2011
THE GREAT DEPRESSION
What do you think it was like to live during the Great Depression? It was regarded as the most catastrophic financial collapse in the history of the United States: beginning in 1929 and stretching for a decade. The stock market crashed, banks failed and unemployment skyrocketed during the Depression years. The feelings of hopelessness, fear and poverty was felt across America. The social and economic climate of this era is reflected in pictures, songs, and writings of this time period. It was also a time that even though all Americans suffered economically, African Americans had to deal with social ills, such as racism, discrimination, and segregation. Also, Communism was existing in eastern countries of the world and Americans were fearful that it would spread to the Western countries of the world. It was a difficult time period all around the world but especially for the United States. Look below this blog entry and find the videos that give you a brief overview of that time period, using pictures, words and songs. After watching and pondering over the material, click on the word comments and answer the question at the beginning of this blog posting: What do you think it was like to live in America during the Great Depression?
